Software systems designed to work — quietly, reliably, correctly

Custom Windows and web software, and the database systems underneath them, built by an engineer who has spent more than thirty years still being responsible for code he wrote five years earlier.

What I do

The difference shows up in year six

Most software is written to be delivered. Less of it is written to be maintained. The difference doesn't show up in the first year — it shows up in year six, when the original team is gone, the documentation is stale, and someone has to change one thing without breaking nine others.

That's the work I do and the standard I build to.

01

Custom application development

Windows desktop and web applications in .NET, built for organizations where the software is infrastructure rather than a product — internal tools, line-of-business systems, operational workflows.

02

Database design and stewardship

SQL Server schema design, query and index tuning, backup and recovery strategy, and the unglamorous discipline of making sure the restore actually works.

03

Legacy system rescue

Inheriting a codebase nobody left notes on, making it understandable, and making it safe to change. This is more of my career than I expected it to be, and I've gotten good at it.

04

Long-term maintenance

Ongoing responsibility for systems that have to keep running. One accountable engineer, no rotation, no handoff to whoever is available this quarter.

Why one engineer

Because for the kind of work above, one engineer who understands the whole system beats a team whose members each understand a piece of it.

The platform I've maintained since 2015 is roughly a million lines. I am the architect, the developer, the DBA, and the person who gets called when it breaks. That arrangement only works if the system is built to be understood — which is exactly the constraint that produces good software.

You get the same arrangement here. You'll always know who wrote it, and that person will still be reachable.
